New Michigan Farm to Institution Network Developing

Numerous people and groups across Michigan are hoping to leverage their impact by working more closely together through the Michigan Farm to Institution Network.

Numerous people and groups across Michigan have been successfully helping institutions to buy and farmers and distributors to sell local food for several years. Now many of them are hoping to leverage their impact by working more closely together through the Michigan Farm to Institution Network.

Last month, nearly 50 people came together to brainstorm ideas for the network, which will be co-led by Colleen Matts at the MSU Center for Regional Food Systems and Hillary Bisnett at the Ecology Center. The network plans to adopt the Michigan Good Food Charter goal for institutions as its centerpiece: By 2020, Michigan institutions will source 20% of their food products from Michigan growers, producers and processors.

By bringing together food service directors, farmers, distributors, state agency staff, advocates and researchers, Matts and Bisnett hope to create a platform for greater collaborations and faster progress towards the 20% by 2020 goal.
