New Federal Nutrition Standards for School Meals

02/1/2012

On January 25, USDA released new standards for school meals, for the first time in over 15 years. These standards will ensure students are offered both fruits and vegetables every day of the week and will require more whole-grain foods, among other changes. The Michigan Good Food Charter calls for schools to implement the Michigan Nutrition Standards, which are generally in line with the new federal standards. While all schools must comply with the federal standards at a minimum, states can choose to implement stricter standards. Watch for the Michigan Department of Education to release a comparison between the federal and state nutrition standards.
