Cultivate Michigan, designed to help ramp up Farm to Institution programs and track progress of purchases throughout the state has a new featured food, milk.

Michigan’s 380,000 dairy cows produced more than 9.2 billion gallons of milk in 2013, contributing $14.7 billion to the state’s economy each year.  The Michigan milk industry ranks 7th in the nation for milk production, and because milk is produced throughout the year, it is always fresh and in season!

To find out if the milk you are consuming is produced in Michigan, you can check the 5-digit code on the container of milk. The code includes a 2-digit state code followed by a 3-digit processing plant code. The state code for Michigan is 26.

The Cultivate Michigan’s Milk Page offers resources on purchasing and promotion, recipes, and more.

The Michigan Farm to Institution Network is a statewide forum for learning and sharing that uses shared capacity to overcome the challenges of getting more Michigan food into institutions.
