What is your role at Good Food Battle Creek?

JRR: I consult with the group to provide administrative and programmatic support for initiatives developed and implemented by the collaborative. A central part of that work is creating awareness of what individuals and organizations are doing in the community, and includes facilitating monthly meetings for education and networking.

How does Good Food Battle Creek work towards the goals of the Good Food Charter?

JRR: Last year, an ad hoc committee was formed to study the Charter and identify which of the 25 agenda priorities Good Food BC had the capacity to address, plus the energy and enthusiasm to support. We landed on seven that focus on access, plus an eighth centered on institutions. As we engage in planning, we make decisions through the ‘lens’ of those eight priorities.

What do you find most exciting or inspiring about what you’re doing?

JRR: Of all the nonprofit sectors I’ve worked in, folks involved in the food movement are by far the friendliest, most passionate, energetic and self-starting people. I reckon good food just does that to people.

What opportunities do you see for moving towards the goals of the Charter?

JRR: As Good Food BC builds momentum locally, we also eyeball regional and state goings on. This is important because it strengthens our awareness and ability to align with and collaborate on policies and activities that address our broken food system.

What is one thing you’ve learned that you’d like to share with others?

JRR: The food movement is real; it’s building steam and will continue to grow as long as everyone keeps spreading the word and working to address the Michigan Good Food Charter’s priorities as they are able – institutionally and individually. Our success truly depends on this both/and posture.
